Our final interview is with Blanca Aguilar. A big thanks to all the artists who took part!
Nombre: Blanca Aguilar
Edad: 22
Tema: Machismo
¿A qué te
dedicas?

What do you do?
I
am studying graphic design at Don Bosco University. I usually work freelance,
and right now I am doing an internship in consulting. Also, apart from that as
an extracurricular, I like to participate in competitions, whether it’s
illustration, animation, or anything like that.
Why did you participate in this
competition?
First
of all, the different themes which you could choose really caught my attention.
I was more inclined towards the themes of sexism and bullying, because they are
things that are happening today in schools, universities, and even in jobs with
adults. I also feel that sexism is an ancient theme, from the past, but even
though we are now in the 21st century it is something that still goes on. So we
have to be able to see beyond that with these posters and with other kinds of
publications, but we have to put and end to it – not just put the idea in
people’s minds, but to stop it at its roots.
What inspired your design? What does
it mean to you?
In
both I have used a collage with antique images, because both of these themes,
as well as the others, are themes that have been going on for a long time. I
have brought them forward to current times, whether because of the colors or
the diverse ways I have mixed them with the photographs and the texture I have
added. Each element that is there always represents something. For example, in
the bullying theme, I have put a background of ropes. It represents how people
get really tied up with themselves when someone makes fun of someone else.
There are people who when they see (bullying) going on, they are only
interested in what other people will think of them. They get tied up and they
can’t see beyond that. That is what I would like to avoid through this poster. What is your hope for the victims of bullying in this country in the future?
Well, that people would open their eyes! We are all people, and no one is better or worse than anyone else. For example, in an English class that I am taking right now, there are people that make fun of people right in front of them, and they can’t even speak English themselves. I think, well, why is she making fun of someone else when she doesn’t have the right to go around talking bad about someone and making fun of them when she can’t even speak English either? It is silly, really illogical. People should see these posters and these themes, they should open their eyes because they are people on the same level as everyone else. No one is better and no one is worse.
