Nombre: Alex Alberto Martínez
Apodo: Axel
Edad: 24
Tema: Homofobia

¿A qué te dedicas?

Nickname: Axel
Age: 24
Theme: Homophobia

What is your name or nickname if you prefer, your age, and what do you do?
I graduated from university with a technical degree in graphic design.

For how long have you been doing graphic design?
For almost six or eight years. Before I started university, I was mostly interested in drawing. Later, because of the influence of my grandmother who told me I should study something along those lines, the closest thing was graphic design. Then I began to work with programs and all of that, and I liked how images could be manipulated and everything. That’s when I said, yeah, this is what I was born to do and what I will always do.

What inspired your design?
Well one of the themes was homophobia, but what do you always see in publicity about homophobia? An angry or scared guy, hitting someone, something like that.  So I wanted to change it up a little. “Let’s form something against homophobia.” Let’s form a world against homophobia, with the hands united and the gay flag. The dove is peace. The letters are unorganized to keep with the theme of forming something, because you’ve got to form the phrase itself.

Why did you choose this theme?
Because in El Salvador, homophobia is everywhere, including in my own family. When they talk about “the gays” or them being “dirty,” it’s because they still don’t know (about me). I wouldn’t say that was my inspiration, but people like that caught my attention. If I had done a really strong image, some straight people might not have even looked at it. At least this way, it draws people’s attention, and they will read it and know.

What is your hope for the LGBTI community here in the future?
It’s not so much as I hope, I guess, but just that friends and family alike would accept people for their gender or preference. That would be the most fundamental thing for me. It will be difficult to achieve, but at least we can fight.

Is there some website or blog where people can see your work?
I have my blog.
